Denver Integrative Health

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a science-based, whole-body approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of symptoms rather than managing them in isolation. It examines how genetics, environment, lifestyle, nutrition, and the microbiome interact to influence health and supports long-term healing through personalized care.

Conventional medicine often focuses on diagnosing disease and managing symptoms. Functional medicine seeks to understand why symptoms are occurring and addresses underlying imbalances using advanced diagnostics, nutrition, lifestyle interventions, and individualized support.

Denver Integrative Health supports a wide range of concerns, including digestive and gut health issues, hormone and thyroid imbalance, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, metabolic health and blood sugar regulation, fatigue, mood and cognitive challenges, skin conditions such as eczema, and chronic symptoms without clear explanations.

Testing is customized based on individual symptoms, age, and health goals and may include:
  • Extensive blood work
  • Comprehensive gut microbiome testing, commonly used in infants and children and completed at home
  • Food sensitivity testing
  • Urine metabolic and organic acid profiles
  • Stool and microbiota mapping
  • Hormone and thyroid panels
  • Nutrient status and inflammatory markers
  • Whole-body testing tailored to specific concerns

Most care plans include diagnostic testing, as data provides clarity and direction. Existing labs can often be reviewed, and testing is always discussed collaboratively before moving forward.

Initial consultations are 1.5 to 2 hours and focus on gathering a comprehensive health history, reviewing symptoms, and determining appropriate testing and next steps.

Yes. Denver Integrative Health works with individuals and families both locally and virtually, allowing for comprehensive care regardless of location.

Ongoing care includes follow-up visits, lab review, plan refinement, progress tracking, and long-term support to help sustain improvements and adapt as health needs change.

Denver Integrative Health is an out-of-network practice and does not bill insurance directly. This allows for extended visits and personalized care. Some lab testing may be eligible for reimbursement depending on your plan.

Many services, lab tests, and supplements may be eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement. Invoices can be provided, and in some cases Letters of Medical Necessity may be available.

Supplements are used strategically and only when appropriate. Recommendations are individualized and adjusted over time based on response and follow-up testing.

Timelines vary based on the individual, age, and health concerns. Some notice improvements within weeks, while others require several months of consistent support. The goal is lasting change, not quick fixes.

Yes. Functional medicine is complementary and works best when integrated with conventional care. Collaboration with other healthcare providers is encouraged.

Many individuals and families seek functional care after years of unresolved symptoms. A deeper, systems-based approach often reveals contributing factors that have been overlooked.

Care begins with scheduling an initial consultation. From there, testing, planning, and ongoing support are guided step by step.

Pediatric and Infant Care FAQs

What is your policy on treating children?

Denver Integrative Health provides complementary and alternative health care services to children ages 2 through 8, in accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes § 6-1-724. We do not provide services to children under age 2. Care for children ages 2–8 requires the written, signed consent of a parent or legal guardian prior to the first visit. As part of this process, we disclose that Nina Kimsey is not a physician licensed under Colorado’s Medical Practice Act, recommend that your child maintain an ongoing relationship with a licensed pediatric health care provider, and request permission to coordinate with that provider when appropriate. See our full Pediatric Care Policy for details.

Testing for children is selected thoughtfully and conservatively, based on clinical relevance, age, and comfort. Gut microbiome testing is one of the most commonly used tools in pediatric care, offering insight into digestion, immune development, and microbial balance, and is completed easily at home. Additional testing is only recommended when truly necessary, and parents are guided through each step.

Pediatric consultations include a detailed review of your child’s health history, development, symptoms, diet, environment, and family history. This comprehensive view helps identify contributing factors and determine whether gentle, age-appropriate testing would be helpful. As with all pediatric care, this begins only after signed parental consent and required disclosures are completed.

Yes. Digestive symptoms in children are common but not always expected. Care focuses on gut microbiome balance, dietary patterns, sensitivities, and nervous system regulation. At-home gut testing provides valuable insight without invasive procedures.

Yes. These concerns are often connected to gut health, immune regulation, nutrient status, and environmental exposures. Gut microbiome testing is frequently used to guide personalized, gentle interventions.

Yes. Behavioral and emotional regulation can be influenced by gut health, blood sugar balance, nutrient status, inflammation, and nervous system function. A root-cause, integrative approach helps identify contributing factors and support resilience.

Yes. Pediatric and infant consultations can be conducted virtually, allowing families to complete intake forms and at-home testing from the comfort of home.
